The first two parts covered the Ugly, and the Bad. Now it is time for the Good side of 2005.

The Good

For me, the Good side of 2005 was represented in Live 8. Live 8 was a series of 10 concerts organised by Sir Bob Geldof and held on July 2nd in an attempt to gather public support into pushing the G8 leaders to increase their aid to Africa.

This event simply showed me that there is still hope in the world.

Yesterday, I listed the Ugly side of 2005: Terrorism. Today, it will be the Bad.

The Bad

Nature Attacks

2005 has definitely been about natural disasters. The year started with the aftermath of the Tsunamis that hit Asia, and reached Africa. The Tsunami took the lives of around 220,000 people, most of them in Indonesia.

The year also witnessed the South Asia earthquake that took the lives of around 70,000 people. This 7.6 degrees earthquake caused most of its damage in Pakistan.

And not to forget Katrina; the catastrophic hurricane that hit New Orleans.

My deepest sympathies go to every one who was affected by these disasters.

sk8er boi

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2005-12-29T16:10:08Z</dcterms:modified>

2005: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

As I said yesterday, I will be putting together a list of what I believe to be the Good, the Bad and the Ugly of 2005. I will be starting by listing the Ugly, and then moving towards the Bad and closing the list with the Good. This way, I can close the year with the thought of its best floating in my mind.

The Ugly

The ugly side of 2005 was the way terrorism spread its dark shadows into new territories in the world. We have witnessed the July attacks in London taking the lives of 52 innocent people in 4 blasts targeting subways and metro busses.

We have also witnessed the November attacks in my dear Amman taking the lives of 60 innocent people; most of them celebrating one of the most secret and beautiful rituals in the world, Marriage.

These attacks have proven that terrorism is a global issue that knows no boundaries and does not discriminate, and it is up to everyone in the world no matter where they live, what they do for a living, or what their religion is to fight it.

Last night, Jordan was hit by a series of explosions targeting civilians at three Amman hotels. These attacks resulted in the death of 56 innocent people. I, as the rest of Jordanians, was in a state of shock and disbelief when I first heard the news. It was just simply unbelievable and hurt full.

I personally still haven't come to peace with the fact the Amman was attacked, just too much.

Today, Jordanians responded. They responded by marching out in the streets of the cities and towns all over Jordan expressing their anger and hate for the terrorists. Expressing their sadness and disbelief. Expressing their solidarity, and their condolences to the victims' families.

Tonight, Jordanians are gathering at the scenes of the three attacks lighting candles in remembrance of the victims; just wish I could be out there with them.

Once again, my deep condolences to the victims families.

Proud to be Jordanian,
